The SkiErg opens HYROX: 1,000 m on the machine straight off your first 1 km run, with seven stations and seven more kilometres still to come. That position makes it less a test of skiing and more a test of judgement — it is the easiest place in the entire race to spend fitness you will desperately want an hour later. This guide covers the standard, a stroke that costs less per metre, and how to pace 1,000 m off your own engine instead of someone else's numbers.

The standard

Every division skis the same 1,000 m, and the monitor is the referee: the full distance must show on the display before you dismount. There is no load to argue about and no rep standard to hit — just metres. In Doubles, the pair splits the 1,000 m between them however they like, and both partners still run every kilometre of the race; Mixed Doubles works at the Men's Open loadings across the stations, and Relay teams of four race at Open loadings.

One fault matters here: stepping off before the monitor reads 1,000 m. It catches tired, distracted athletes more often than it should — ski the last strokes watching the display, not the athlete in the next bay, and keep hold of the handles until the number is complete.

Position is what makes this station strategic. The ski is the only station you meet on fresh legs — every later station happens deeper into fatigue. That freshness is a trap: effort feels cheaper than it is, pace feels easier than it is, and the field around you is moving at its most reckless. Ride the discipline, not the adrenaline.

Technique: a stroke that costs less

Drive with the trunk, hang on the lats

The SkiErg stroke is a controlled fall, not an arm pull. Start tall, hands high, then crunch your torso down and through while your bodyweight loads the handles — the lats and arms transmit force, they don't generate it. Athletes who pull with their biceps burn out their smallest muscles first; athletes who hinge and crunch spread the work across trunk, lats, and hips, which have the capacity to hold the full 1,000 m without fading.

Reach high, finish long

Catch each stroke with your wrists above head height — reach, don't shrug — and finish with your hands driving down past your thighs as the hips push back. Stroke length is free speed: the longer each cycle, the fewer strokes you need for the same distance, and the lower the stroke rate for the same pace. Short, choppy half-strokes force a high rate, and rate is what drags heart rate up.

Set the drag for repeatability, not ego

Set the damper where you can hold a strong, complete stroke for the entire distance — for most athletes that is a moderate setting, not the top of the dial. Heavier drag rewards raw strength per stroke but taxes every stroke more; lighter drag rewards rhythm. The only test that matters: can you keep the stroke together at this setting for 1,000 m immediately after running a kilometre? If not, the setting is wrong.

Lock your breathing to the cycle

Exhale on the drive down, inhale as the hands ride back up — one breath per stroke, every stroke. A locked breathing rhythm is a free pacing governor: the breath breaks down before the pace does, so the moment you can't hold the cycle, you are over your sustainable effort and you know it early enough to fix it.

Pacing 1,000 m: peg it to your own engine

Forget universal target splits — a pace that is suicide for one athlete is a warm-up for another. Anchor to your own fitness instead: take the pace you could hold for a fresh, repeatable 1,000 m on the erg — a hard, steady effort, not your all-out test — and add 2-5 seconds to it on race day. If you are better on the rower than the ski, expect your ski pace to sit slightly slower than your rowing pace at the same effort; the upper-body-dominant stroke simply uses less muscle. Then hold it flat. The station is short enough that even pacing wins: a deliberately restrained first 250 m keeps the middle honest, and whatever you have left at 750 m gets spent watching the monitor climb — not sprinting past athletes who will pass you back on the next run.

The dismount is part of the station. Your next task is a 1 km run toward the sleds, and the skill of compromised running starts the moment you step off the erg: settle your breathing in the first strides, find your race rhythm early, and treat the run as recovery at pace rather than a chance to make time back. How to train it

SkiErg pace is built in three places: repeatable intervals at race effort, easy volume that grooves the stroke, and brackets that rehearse the compromise.

  • Race-pace intervals — 5 × 500 m at planned race effort, 60-90 seconds rest. Hold the same stroke length and rate on every interval. The goal is boring consistency — every rep within a couple of seconds of the last, no hero first rep, no fade on the fifth.
  • Technique volume — 10-15 minutes continuous at conversational effort, once a week. Easy skiing is where stroke changes actually stick. Groove the high catch and the trunk drive without fatigue corrupting the pattern, and let the aerobic base come along for free.

No one wins HYROX on the SkiErg — it is the first station, and first stations don't hand out trophies. But plenty of races are quietly lost there in the opening minutes of enthusiasm.
